The method involves determining the actual vehicle position, determination of a journey route based on available criteria, start and target locations and available map data and storage of route data representing a previously covered route or sections of an already covered route so the route planning can be made using stored data not available from the map data. An Independent claim is made for a navigation device for use by cross-country vehicles that allow previously stored route data to be used in addition to map data in journey planning.
