An optical gas sensor comprises a radiation source (12) and a porous sensitive layer (22) arranged on a substrate. The sensitive layer contains particles (16) which are optically transparent for the radiation (13) produced by the radiation source and extend the optical path of the radiation. Preferred Features: The particles contain glass or quartz and have a diameter of 3-20 microns m. The particles are hollow and at least part of the surface is coated with a material (18) sensitive to the gas being detected. The sensitive layer or the sensitive material contains tetraoctylammonium hydroxide.
