Method for determining the absolute position of a moving element (3) in an activation-signaling unit (1-3) has the following steps: determination of the start position of the moving element at the time of generation of a commence operation signal and storage of incremental or integral values, dependent on the actual position of the moving element relative to the start position. Independent claims are made for: an activation-signaling unit (1-3) for a vehicle braking system for determining movement of the brake pedal (4) with a moving element (3) that moves relative to path sensors (1, 2) with the position additionally determined using absolute sensors (5, 16); a brake-by- wire system; and an electronic controller (8) in a brake-by-wire system.
