Adaptive fuel strategy for a hybrid electric vehicle

The invention relates to a device and a method with which an adaptive fuel table (92) in a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) can be completely adapted in a short time by means of an adaptive fuel strategy (88). The fuel strategy (88) adjusts the amount of fuel delivered to an internal combustion engine to optimize engine efficiency and emissions using engine sensors before allowing the adaptive fuel strategy to be activated, according to HEV idle decision logic, and with a normal state of charge of a battery (36), a normal negative pressure in an air conditioning system and a brake system reservoir and not pending cleaning of a fuel vapor container (58). According to the strategy, different air mass flow areas of the engine (24) for adapting the cells are run through within the adaptive fuel table (92). In a preferred configuration, a generator (30) connected to the vehicle drive increases or decreases the torque in order to keep the engine speed constant during engine throttling.
