The device for taking hold of paper sheets by an edge has sheet supports (25.2,25.3) which are movable in the longitudinal direction of the edge (3.1) and which can be brought together. A sheet separator encloses the sheet supports in their joined together state. The sheet separator is provided in the middle of the edge of the sheet to be gripped and the sheet supports are movable to positions on both sides of the middle and in which they are symmetrically located in relation to the middle. An Independent claim is included for a sheet deliverer for a sheet fed rotary printing press equipped with the aforesaid device for taking hold of paper sheets by an edge.
