The device has at least one movable overflow threshold (3) instead of a stationary overflow device or mounted in a stationary one (2). Several movable overflow thresholds can be used, pref. sequentially or even in parallel. The movable threshold consists of one or more geometrically defined parts with a channel shape favourable for measurement purposes, e.g. rectangular, triangular or with a curved upper edge. It is adjusted with one or more suitable elements, e.g. chains, belts or toothed rods.
