The call answering system identifies the country number within the incoming call to determine the country of origin, for selecting the appropriate language for the spoken response. When a call is received from a country for which the call response in the appropriate language is not available, the spoken response is provided in a standard language. The call responses in the different languages may be stored on compressed form in a memory (MEM) which is addressed via a function control (HOST) having an evaluation stage (ALNR) for the country of origin of the incoming call.
