Lecture Notes on Hardware Description Languages-Introduction (Re-Announcement of TIB-B89-80661)

Ever increasing VLSI complexity enforces a digital systems designer to reach for a highly advanced CAD tools. Design task specification is an important aspect of modelling. Hardware Description Languages (HDLs) are commonly used for this purpose. The report introduces in a tutorial manner basic notions related to HDLs. MODLAN, the hardware MODule description LANguage constitutes a basis used for illustrative examples. It is a tool for digital systems multilevel description from an algorithmic level down to the chip level. Three types of descriptions are incorporated in MODLAN namely: structural, functional, and behavioral. Hardware description languages briefly presented are: DACAPO II, KARL III, CONLAN, VHDL, and EDIF. (Copyright (c) GMD 1987.)
