Lecture Notes on Hardware Description Languages: Introduction to VHDL

摘要

VHDL is to play in hardware, and especially in VHSIC VLSI design a similar role to ADA in programming languages domain. As a standard hardware description language, VHDL is expected to: support a methodology of systematic design; enable design specification and verification during a whole design process; enable storing of design experience (best design solutions are collected in a design library); provide a possibility of employing the latest technological achievements in a current design; assure a possibility of generating new design versions realized in new technologies on the basis of design solutions stored in the design library; and support design documentation and exchange of design information. The report is intended to provide an introduction to VHDL. In the first part, where the primary mechanisms of VHDL are introduced, a constructive example of VHDL application to Am2901 chip design is given. (Copyright (c) GMD 1988.)
