Device comprises a laser emitter (17) for transmitting a laser beam towards a point (P) on an object (O) surface, a photo-sensitive detector (18) for detecting reflected light which is then transformed into a value representative of the point coordinates. A displacement mechanism (10-12, 6, 16a) allows controlled movement of the laser-detector assembly relative to the object and a processor (22) allows calculation of the coordinates as a function of the position of the displacement mechanism. An Independent claim is made for a method for determining the three-dimensional coordinates of an object.
