Impact points of a beam are detected by matrix of direct reading photo-sensors. The space monitored is split into secure zone (20) and peripheral zone (22). Several light sources (14a) in the secure zone are illuminated with higher frequency than sources emitting beams (14b) in the peripheral zone. Data collected by the photo-sensors is transmitted to processor which analyses the data and records partial image which is reconstituted by processor into 3D global image. Method of detection of the occupation of a space inside a vehicle: (a) transmit from small size laser emitters a light beam towards the space to be monitored; (b) detect the impact points of the beam; (c) reconstitute by active triangulation an image by means of the detected impacts. The peripheral zone is divided into several light zones. All the light sources corresponding to the same zone are simultaneously illuminated. Following certain particular events, all the light sources are illuminated, simultaneously or after a predetermined order, so as to reform the image group in the monitored zone. After image reforming it is compared with images stored in memory so as to define if the monitored space is empty or if objects or person(s) is there.
