The I.C. engine incorporates an inlet gas ionizer which enhances the oxidant power of the inlet gases to reduce polluting emissions. The gas system incorporates a recirculating pipe with a control valve to feed some of the burned gases back into the inlet circuit to mix with the inlet air downstream of the ionizer, and the latter has at least one non-calorific plasma discharge reactor. The I.C. engine (10), with a gas inlet circuit (12) and an exhaust circuit (14) for exhaust gases, connected to the combustion chambers (16) in its cylinders (18), incorporates an inlet gas ionizer (26) which enhances the oxidant power of the inlet gases with a view to reducing polluting emissions. The gas system, which has an exhaust gas treatment filter or catalytic converter (24), incorporates a recirculating pipe (20) with a control valve (22) to feed some of the burned gases back into the inlet circuit to mix with the inlet air downstream of the ionizer, and the latter has at least one non-calorific plasma discharge reactor.
