The adjustable steering column comprises a steering shaft (1) rotating in a tube (2) in a support unit (6) fixed to the vehicle structure. The tube can be adjusted relative to the support unit by means of an adjusting system (4). The tube is held in position relative to the support unit by means of a clamping device, which rotates around a clamping axis (9), comprising a locking unit (8) which is controlled by rotating around the clamping axis. The clamping device comprises damping of the control composed of a braking system (7) between a mobile element (42) of the locking unit and the support unit.
