Process of regeneration of metathesis catalysts comprising rhenium, molybdenum or tungsten compounds on a porous refractory oxide support and an organometallic promoter involves extraction of the promoter, calcination of the catalyst and re-impregnation with promoter. Process of regeneration of metathesis catalysts comprises rhenium, molybdenum or tungsten compounds on a porous refractory oxide support and an organometallic promoter. The promoter comprises an alkyl tin or lead compound of general formula, (R')4M. M = tin or lead; and R' = 1 - 40C aliphatic hydrocarbyl. The process comprises extraction of the promoter, calcination of the catalysts, and the treated and a re-impregnation stage of the catalyst by the tin or lead-containing promoter. An Independent claim is also included for the metathesis process of olefins.
