PURPOSE: To perform reliable control of combustion of each cylinder by a method wherein angular acceleration of a rotary shaft driven by an internal combustion engine is detected and a combustion worsening state is decided through comparison of a detecting result with a given threshold value set according to the angular acceleration and the operation state of an internal combustion engine. ;CONSTITUTION: Angular acceleration of a crank shaft at an intercrank period is calculated by an angular acceleration acceleration detecting means 107 comprising a main element consisting of a crank angle sensor and a cylinder discrimination sensor. The angular acceleration is compared with a given threshold, set by a threshold updating means 110 to set and update a threshold for comparing an angular acceleration according to an engine state, by a combustion worsening decision value calculation means 104 to determine a combustion worsening decision value. The combustion worsening decision value is determined by accumulating a worsening amount with a difference between angular acceleration and a threshold serving as a weight and by reducing the influence of a numerical value approximately equal to a threshold value, a worsening state is accurately reflected.
