PURPOSE: To produce a roll for rolling, excellent in wear resistance and cracking resistance, by forming an outer layer material of a roll for finish rolling, used for producing a hot rolled steel plate, by using a high speed steel with a specific composition. ;CONSTITUTION: At the time of producing a hot rolled steel plate by rolling a high temp. steel slab by the use of a hot rolling mill consisting of roughing mill and finish rolling mill, the outer layer part, to be brought into direct contact with a steel plate to be rolled, of a work roll used in the front stage of a finish rolling mill is formed by using a high speed steel which has a composition consisting of, by weight, 1.5-3.5% C, 1.50% Si, 1.20% Mn, 5.50-12.0% Cr, 2.0-8.0% Mo, 3.00-10.0% v, 0.60-7.00% Nb, 0.01-0.20% B, 0.08-0.30% N, and the balance Fe or further containing 5.5% Ni and/or 20.0% W and satisfying V+1.8Nb≤7.5C-6.0 and 0.20≤Nb/V≤0.80. By this method, the work roll for hot finish rolling, having the outer layer part reduced in friction coefficient and excellent in wear resistance and cracking resistance, can be produced.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
