New High-Performance Roll Materials for Hot Rolling of Steel

With the increasing demand for steel products with extraordinary mechanical properties, rolls are facing more chaEenging conditions: Loads are in some cases higher than 10000 kN. In addition torque is applied of magnitudes larger than 6 MNm through the neck for turning a (work) roll. Consequently, contact stress between work and backup rolls as well as between work rolls is significantly rising and sometimes even exceeds the materials characteristics. Furthermore, the surface quality of the rolled product plays a key factor in a world with increasing demands of the customer.
