PURPOSE: To provide an autoxidation-type hair dye enabling the hair to be dyed to natural color tone without using any oxidizing agent and developing no change in the color tone with time, also excellent in fastness and safety. ;CONSTITUTION: This hair dye contains each 0.01-10wt.% of (A) a compound of the formula [R₁ is H, 1-8C alkyl, 1-8C hydroxyalkyl, p-aminophenyl, phenyl or SO₃H; R₂ is H, 1-8C alkyl or 1-8C hydroxyalkyl; R₃ and R₄ are each H, 1-4C alkyl, 2-4C alkoxy, halogen, COOH, COOR₅ (R₅ is 1-4C alkyl), CONH₂ or SO₃H] [pref. p-phenylenediamine, p-toluylenediamine or N,N-bis(2- hydroxyethyl)-p-phenylenediamine] and (B) gallic acid or tannic acid, or a derivative therefrom (pref. acid).
