PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method, etc., for adjusting an optical waveguide type diffraction grating element so as to have a desired polarization characteristic.;SOLUTION: In the beginning, an optical fiber 111 is prepared (step S1) and refractive index modulation 114 is formed for this optical fiber 111 (step S2). Consequently, the optical waveguide type diffraction grating element 110 is temporarily manufactured. Then a polarization characteristic of the optical waveguide type diffraction grating element 110 is measured and the azimuth of birefringence of the optical waveguide type diffraction grating element 110 is found (step S3). Then the optical fiber 111 is irradiated with refractive index change-inducting light containing a polarized light component which is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the optical fiber 111 from an irradiation direction corresponding to the found azimuth of the birefringence to cause new birefringence in the optical fiber 111 by the irradiation (step S4). Consequently, the polarization characteristic of the optical waveguide type diffraction grating element 110 is adjusted.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
