PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass ceramic and a glass ceramic substrate having characteristic such as low thermal expansion, high transmittance in the visible light area and a low specific gravity. ;SOLUTION: This glass ceramic is obtained by thermal treating of a specified base glass for glass ceramic to deposit a crystalline phase comprising -quarts- based solid solution, wherein the specified base glass comprises, in terms of mol%, 55 to 70 SiO2, 13 to 23 Al2O3, 11 to 21 alkli metal oxides (provided that 10 to 20 Li2O and total 0.1 to 3 Na2O+K2O), 0.1 to 4 TiO2, and 0.1 to 2 ZrO2, provided that the total of the above components is 95 mol% or more and further comprises 0 to less than 0.2 mol% of BaO, 0 to less than 0.1 mol% of P2O5, 0 to less than 0.3 mol% of B2O3, and 0 to less than 0.1 mol% of SnO2.
