PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for irradiation with ultrashort laser pulses through a medium within a long optical path which can by easily eliminating a drawback that the output peak value is reduced due to broadening of the pulse width caused in the propagation of an ultra-short pulse laser beam through a medium such as the air. PSOLUTION: Means for expanding, amplifying, and compressing oscillation pulses in a short pulse laser oscillator 12 is provided. A target object 7 can be irradiated with a sharp ultra-short pulse laser beam by measuring the distance to the target object 7, calculating refractive index dispersion of the air to previously control the pulse width, and sending the controlled pulse.
