PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a position recognizing unit of a function liquid drop ejection head for recognizing the image position of the function liquid drop ejection head having a nozzle array consisting of a large number of ejection nozzles opened in an elongated recess made in the nozzle forming face of the head body, wherein an imaging means is provided to face the vicinity of the end part of the recess so that the image position of an ejection nozzle closest to the end edge of the recess can be determined surely regardless of the surface state of the nozzle forming face.;SOLUTION: An oblique illumination means for irradiating illumination light from a direction inclining against the optical axis of an imaging means is provided so that a shade 64a corresponding to the end edge of a recess in the nozzle forming face appears in the image of the imaging means. Position of the end edge of the recess is specified by pattern matching based on the shade 64a and the image position of an ejection nozzle 57a closest to the end edge is determined.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
