PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminating optical system for uniformly illuminating a picture display element, a projection type picture display device using the illuminating optical system, and an illumination adjustment method for adjusting the light radiation range or the like on each picture element in the illuminating optical system and the projection type display device. SOLUTION: In the projection type picture display device which has a plurality of light transmitting optical systems 6 to 8G and 8B for transmitting a plurality of color light obtained by color separation of illuminating light to picture display elements 9G and 9B and synthesizes and projects each color light modulated by the picture display elements, the light radiation range on the picture display elements by at least one of the light transmitting optical systems is made wider than those by other light transmitting optical systems.
