The invention provides a complement inhibitor derived from variola, called smallpox inhibitor of complement enzymes (SPICE) and SPICE-related proteins, such as fusion proteins. These proteins are useful in the treatment of complement-mediated conditions, such as hyperacutc rejection of xenografts.
