The plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) is a mediator between environmental stimulus and plant responses. Farnesyl transferase protein is required for the normal functioning of negative regulators of ABA sensitivity. Disclosed in the application is a transgenic plant having a mutation in the gene encoding farnesyl transferase, wherein the activity of the protein farnesyl transferase is inhibited and thus ABA response is enhanced, resulting in an increase in a plants tolerance to stress (such as drought) and senescence.
