POLY(PHENYLENE ETHER) RESIN MODIFIED WITH SILICONE RUBBER POWDER

A free-flowing silicone rubber powder, having anaverage particle size of 1 to 1000 microns and prepared bymixing a polydiorganosiloxane with a silica filler, isuniformly dispersed in a poly(phenylene ether) resin usingconventional equipment, such as a single screw or,preferably, a twin screw extruder. When employed atrelatively low concentrations, such as about 0.2 to 3 partsby weight of powder per 100 parts by weight of resin, asignificant improvement in the processability of the resin isobtained, while modification at higher levels, such as 5 to20 parts by weight of powder per 100 parts by weight of theresin, results in a resin composition having greatlyaugmented impact resistance.
