Thermomechanical treatment of steel comprises hot working to cause dynamic and/or static austenite recrystallization prior to quenching and tempering. In the thermomechanical treatment of steel, for torsion loaded spring elements, by heating at 50 K/sec. to the austenitizing temperature, austenitizing, deforming in one or more steps, quenching to below the martensite temperature and then tempering, deformation is carried out at a temperature which causes dynamic and/or static austenite recrystallization. Preferred Features: Deformation is carried out in the range 1000-800 degrees C and the steel is a silicon-chromium steel containing 0.35-0.75 (especially 0.45-0.65) % C and micro alloying additions of vanadium and/or other alloying element.
