The hammer has a ram guide to move a tool (7) carried on a ram (6,6') up and down between uprights (1). Each guide has an adjustable guide strip (10) fitted to an upright, which co-operates with a reworkable ram guide path (11,12) formed of ram material. The ram guide path is limited by two ram path pieces (11,12), which limit a central ram area (13), in which the ram material is set back from the ram path pieces.
