[Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A forging-hammer is provided with adjustable ram guide means comprising two vertically elongated elements, one of which is a guide member, said elements having engaging surfaces conforming with a vertical circle of long radius, means for holding one of said elements against vertical movement and means for adjusting the other element vertically. The hammer or ram 12 moves between vertical guides 17, each of which has a rear surface 20 conforming to a vertical circle of comparatively long radius. Each guide is urged into a slot in the framework of the machine by spring pullbaoks 37 and closely contacts the similarly curved forward surface of a backing plate 22. A wedge 23 is interposed between the base of the slot and the flat rearward face of the backing plate 22. By adjusting the wedge 23 by means of a screw and nut 24, 26, the guide and backing plate are moved bodily to or from the ram. If the backing plate is moved up or down by a similar screw and nut device, the guide is tilted in a vertical plane. Thus by raising the backing plate the lower end of the guide may be moved inwardly to compensate for the greater amount of wear which usually occurs at the lower ends. In a modified form, the wedge 23 is omitted, so that a tilting adjustment only of the guide may be obtained. In a further form, Fig. 4, the wedge is again omitted and the backing plate is in two parts 42. If both parts are raised or lowered together, a tilting adjustment is obtained but if they are moved towards or away from each other, a lateral movement of the guide is obtained. If desired, the backing plate could be fixed and the guide mounted for slight vertical adjustment over the surface of the plate.
