The present invention provides a new improved method of manufacturing barium titanate by pyrolysis of barium titanyl oxalate tetrahydrate. The process includes a drying and thermal decomposition, or pre-calcination step in which the barium titanyl oxalate tetrahydrate is suspended in the gas phase and pyrolized in a flash calciner. The process results in improved product characteristics due to high heating rates, and increased efficiency of the final calcination step where crystal growth of the barium titanate occurs.
