Physical and chemical treatment and also separation into fractions of industrial and/or domestic waste involves aerobic and anaerobic fermentation steps. Physical and chemical treatment and also separation into fractions of industrial and/or domestic waste comprises (i) separating off ferro-, diameter- and para-magnetic metals from the comminuted waste using magnets and a vortex separator; (ii) subjecting to aerobic fermentation optionally with addition of water, nutrients and/or microorganisms; (iii) making an aqueous suspension of the product and separating off a floating fraction and a sedimented coarse fraction; and (iv) subjecting the fluid (preferably flowable) phase to anaerobic fermentation.
