The present invention relates to liquid crystal compositions having a negative thermal layer expansion value in at least one gradient (or latent gradient) smectic intermediate phase and a net thermal layer expansion value in at least one gradient (or latent gradient) smectic intermediate phase. A method of controlling the interlayer spacing in a mixture of smectic liquid crystal compounds, comprising the step of combining a positive liquid crystal composition, wherein each composition contains at least one smectic liquid crystal compound or a latent smectic liquid crystal compound. The method can control or suppress the geometry of the chevron layer by adjusting the interlayer spacing on the sloped smectic intermediate phase (s).
