PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR IDENTIFYING TYPHOON IN WEATHER PICTURE

PURPOSE: A method for identifying a typhoon in a weather picture received from a weather satellite receiving system to give an alarm is provided. An apparatus for realizing the method is also provided. CONSTITUTION: The method for identifying a typhoon in a weather picture comprises the steps of: (i) converting the received weather picture data into a binary coded image; (ii) filtering the binary coded image data to convert it into a simple and smooth image; (iii) extracting the contour line from the filtered image data; (iv) monitoring the pixels successively starting from one pixel among the pixels on the closed curve forming the extracted contour line and storing the monitored pixels in the forms of x and y coordinates on array; (v) detecting the array in which the number of stored pixels, length of x-axis, length of y-axis and the ratio of the lengths of x-axis to y-axis are greater than the preset values, determining the candidate having the greatest number of pixels as a typhoon and calculating the presence, location and dangerous zone of the typhoon; and (vi) displaying the calculated typhoon and dangerous zone on the weather picture overlapped with the electronic navigational chart.
