The method involves strip projection and triangulation using at least one camera (10), pref. a video camera, an image sequence digitising and storage device, an illumination projector (11), an illumination device and an image control and processing computer. A calibration device (12) is placed at different positions inside and at the edge of the working vol. to be calibrated and illuminated so that regions of its signal marks have maximum grey values or colour modulation in the digitised and stored images without saturation. The camera is calibrated using a standard photogrammetric method. A projector with a light modulator projects image elements onto the calibration device. The projector is calibrated by observing it as an inverse camera. The measured and stored parameters are recovered for use with the operational sensor system to correct the beam geometry in the camera and projector.
