Thermal decomposition of sulfur-containing materials in presence of fuel, oxygen-containing gas is carried out at 700-1100 deg C in reactor (1). Oxygen-containing gas is passed into reactor through fluidized bed of particles and sulfur-containing materials are fed in. Gas containing solids is removed and fed to solids separator (10). Gas containing sulfur dioxide is removed from separator and fed back to reactor. Process for thermal decomposition of sulfur-containing materials in the presence of fuel, oxygen-containing gas and material in particles is carried out at 700-1100 deg C in a reactor (1). The oxygen-containing gas is passed into the reactor through a fluidized bed of particles, into which the sulfur-containing materials are also fed. Gas containing at least 500 g/Nm3 solids is removed through a pipe (9) at the top of the reactor and fed to a solids separator (10). Gas containing at least 5 volume.% of sulfur dioxide is removed from the separator and fed back to the base of the reactor.
