Method for protection of a microcomputer system against manipulation of its programs. The microcomputer has a re- writable memory in which at least a part of the program is stored. A start value is used with a part of the memory contents to form a code word or checksum. The start values are individually assigned to a microcomputer. An Independent claim is made for a microcomputer system whereby the start value used in calculating a code word or checksum is stored in read only memory.
