A flat three-phase motor (2) turns an epicyclic gear (1) driving the shaft or drum (3). The latter (3) drives the e.g. travelator chains. The motor is located at the side, close to the travelator belt. The epicyclic gear fits into the hollow drive shaft or drum (3), which carries chain-wheels (4) for the travelator belt and if appropriate, the moving handrail chain-wheels.
