The winch is particularly for motor vehicles, having a drum running in bearings at each end on a mounting and forming the annulus of an epicyclic gear train. The drive to the gear train is provided by a motor supported at one end of the mounting. The motor (4) is mounted inside the drum (3), and supported at the mounting end (1) opposite to the gear train (5). It can be a direct-current motor, whose shaft (7) at the commutator end (B) is coupled to the gear train and braked by a multi-disc solenoid brake (19, 20), whose stationary discs (19) are mounted on the motor housing. Motor and brake cables can be taken out through the field windings and the other end cover (A).
