A fuel cell has a fuel cell unit with a membrane electrode unit and a reservoir for a methanol-water mixture. A methanol-permeable diaphragm (2) acts an element for supplying methanol to an anode (12). The diaphragm can be separated mechanically from the reservoir by means of a slide (6). If necessary, the anode and/or a polymer membrane can serve as a diaphragm.
