Inductive rotational velocity or position sensor has an output signal that is dependent on whether a measured value lies above or below a threshold. During start-up the sensor assumes a threshold value that may be incorrect for its initial position. This is then checked during operation and if it is found that the wrong threshold value was used, then this situation is signaled and the sensor output signal modified accordingly.
