A laser beam (12) with a wave length of approximately 670 nm is directed at the weld (13). The beam reflected from the weld passes through focussing optics (7), a barrier filter (17) to block the transmitted portion of the laser beam and an interferometer (21,24) generating an interference image recorded by a CCD camera (25) to determines the wave length of light emitted from the weld. Beam splitters (15,18) direct reflected light to photodiodes (16) to record the luminosity, and for recording the temperature or color temperature of the weld.
