Non-contact measurement of the condition of plant growth, according to bio-physical parameters, uses a modulated and artificial light from a single halogen or xenon flash lamp (2) in a light spot or strip. The reflected light from the foliage is detected in the visible and/or near infra red spectrum, and signals are passed to an evaluation and signal processing unit (15) to be evaluated by an algorithm to determine the parameters. The light flashes are generated in a rapid succession by a transmitter (1), and unwanted wavelengths are blocked by a filter (5). The reflection signals are generated by at least two selective receivers (3), set to given and pre-set wavelengths. The system is calibrated by measurement of known plant growth with recorded parameters.
