The method has the following steps: the exhaust gas return rate (20) is determined using an engine gas (3) mass flow measurement, an air mass flow measurement (Wluft) and a temperature measurement value(taumix1); from the temperature measurement a temperature estimate value is determined using a parameter representative of the temperature sensor response; and the estimate value is used to determine engine gas flow and exhaust gas return rate. The invention also relates to a corresponding control and monitoring device for an exhaust gas return valve and a storage medium on which control and monitoring module is stored.
