The method involves determining temporal change of temperature (14) that is measured with a temperature sensor, and an exhaust gas mass flow in an exhaust gas passage, where a temperature-sensor element of a particle sensor that is arranged in an exhaust gas channel of a combustion engine is utilized as the sensor. Exhaust gas temperature (13) is determined under consideration of temporal change of the measured temperature, the exhaust gas mass flow and application factors that are dependent on mounting conditions of the temperature sensor and a thermal mass of an exhaust line. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining exhaust gas temperature in the exhaust gas passage of the combustion engine.
