Joining of laminates by laser welding, e.g. for rapid prototyping, includes perforating the laminates in a staggered pattern

A series of laminates are joined successively in a stack by local laser welding in a pattern distributed over the surface. The laminates are perforated in a pattern staggered from layer to layer. The welds are placed correspondingly so that any distortion is accommodated in the hole below. The holes as well as the outer contour can be cut by laser, water jet, erosion or machining. The holes are preferably equally spaced and can be circular, cross-shaped or slits.
