Method for encoding video signals sorts scanned levels of a predictive error matrix prior to entropic coding so as to let values of levels decrease uniformly and to obtain a more efficient coding.
Up-to-date image data is estimated from image areas already transmitted. A predictive error matrix (PFM) is formed, linearized by scanning (SCAN) coefficients and converted into a sequence of levels (SL) (1) and lengths of strings of zeros. The SL is sorted indirectly via an index field (I) according to size of amount and sorting information (s) is generated to be encoded with a sorted SL (1'). The code values produced are attached to an output bit stream (COUT). An Independent claim is also included for a device for encoding video signals.
