Production of a saturated aliphatic 3-30C carboxylic acid comprises (A) optional metathesis and/or oligomerization of 1-butene, cis-2-butene and/or trans-2-butene to form 2-29C alkenes; (B) hydroformylation of 1-butene, cis-2-butene and/or trans-2-butene and/or the 2-29C alkenes from step (A) to form 3-30C alkanals; and (C) oxidation of the resulting 3-30C alkanals to form 3-30C carboxylic acids.
