Device for characterizing protein regions (on a flat carrier) or protein spots (on a blot) in which one or more energy sources and one or more sensors (optionally controllable at their working position) are arranged with respect to protein regions and/or an array of regions. An Independent claim is also included for a method of characterizing proteins (on a carrier or blot) in which the protein (and/or bound ligand) is converted, wholly or in part, to the gas phase by temporally and spatially defined application of energy from an energy source (or array of sources).The signal profile is then detected in temporally and spatially defined manner, using a semiconductor-based gas sensor (or array of sensors), particularly having adjustable working positions.
