The press section to extract water from a web (1), of paper or cardboard or tissue, has a continuous and rough water-absorbent belt (2) to carry the web through at least one press gap formed by rollers (12) on one side of the web and a smooth continuous belt (3) on the other side of it. The rough belt is separated from the web after passing through the roller press gap. To reduce the two-sided effect, after the rough belt has been detached the smooth belt forms a press gap for the web with a smooth press surface with a pressure of 3-100 kN/m and preferably 5-20 kN/m. The smooth press surface is formed by a second smooth belt or a heated smooth roller (4), as the final press gap in the press station.
