The invention proposes that the absolute changing torque values of the torque exerted on the steering column measured by a torque sensor are integrated. The vehicle is then steered on the basis of this integrated change in torque which provides a measure of both the force exerted by the driver on the steering wheel and the condition of the road surface (smooth or uneven). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a steering device;and (2) a method for determining vehicle steering conditions.
